Can I be put on probation, required to do public service, and not get locked up?
Yes. The court has wide discretion to sentence you as it feels is in in the "best interests of the minor" and as is necessary to protect society. Generally, the probation department will recommend a sentence to the court. The judge is free to follow their recommendation or to impose a different sentence. You can be released home on probation; released home but have to attend a juvenile school; released to a special live-in school or institution for troubled youth; or sent to juvenile jail.
