Mayhem is defined as a battery that includes the intentional
amputation, disfigurement, or disabling of a bodily part. For example,
it would be mayhem to bite off someone's finger during a bar fight,
shatter someone's kneecaps with a baseball bat, or poke out a person's
eye. Most states do not treat mayhem as a separate offense, but
consider it a form of aggravated battery.
