Someone applied for credit cards in my name and besides being dunned by collection agencies, my credit is ruined. How can they do this, and why can't I clear my credit card when I did nothing wrong?
Your experience is the essence of identity theft. Your date of birth, driver's license number, social security number and bank account numbers and locations are valuable information that should be guarded carefully. It is still difficult to clear your own credit even after the police establish that it was not you that ran up the debts, because this is a relatively new crime and Federal and state laws have not yet caught up with this crime. Legislation is needed to force credit reporting agencies to promptly clear your credit report once the identity theft is proved by the police. Jurisdictions are starting to respond, but a comprehensive Federal scheme is needed.
