I have had large monthly charges put onto my credit card that I never authorized. It is the same amount every month. I didn't even notice it the first two months, as I thought my husband had charged something. What's going on?
This has become very popular among identity theft criminals. If you shop on line, you may be dealing with a reputable web site, but sometimes such sites have "business partners" that are not carefully screened and that are NOT ethical. The problem arises when you register a credit card with the trusted web site. That information is then available to any of the site's "partners," who then sign you up for a non-existent monthly service or subscription of some kind. Your luck in catching these criminals is unlikely to be good if they are in eastern Europe or certain Asian nations. These days, you need to scrutinize your monthly credit card statement every time and immediately report any unauthorized charges, especially if they are very small. Identity thieves will usually put a small charge on your card, maybe $1.98, to see if you spot it. If you don't, then come the big charges. Imagine how much money they make if they hit 1,000,000 card holders with three monthly charges of $59.99. |
