Is it larceny if I take something as a practical joke?
Generally not, if it is intended to be mischievous and in the spirit of
fun, since the required intent to permanently deprive the owner of the
property would be absent. You'd have to prove that however, and if the
owner reports the theft to police before you return the "joke"
larcenous property, you may have trouble convincing people how funny it
is.
