In my capacity as a public official, I receive campaign contributions both ‘with’ and ‘without’ strings. As an inducement to vote against a public project, I have received a compaign contribution. Will I be prosecuted for accepting a bribe in the latter circumstance?
Quite possibly. If you accepted the contribution AFTER you had cast your vote—pro or con—you probably would be not guilty of bribery. However, accepting money, knowing of the attached condition, prior to the vote, would result in a date with the local prosecutor since it would be viewed that you were being influenced in the performance of an official act.
